Greg Gibbons - Club Director and Coach
Greg begins his first year as Club Director!
Greg graduated from Iowa State University where he was a four-year letterman on the Men’s Volleyball team. In addition, from 1992-1997 he was a member of the US Military Olympic team.
Greg has over 10 years experience at the club and high school levels.
Greg Gibbons is in his fourth season as the Associate Head Volleyball Coach for the UC Santa Barbara Women’s Volleyball team. Prior to UCSB, he was an assistant for the Pepperdine Men's Volleyball team from 2003-2006. In that time, he helped the program to a conference championship, two final-four appearances, and a National Championship in 2005. In addition, he was the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at California Lutheran University from 2003-2006 where he won a conference championship, was nationally ranked in the top 20, and made a sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament.
From 2000-2006, he spent time on staff with USA Volleyball where he finished his tenure as the Head Coach of the US SCVA Youth National Team that took home the Bronze at the Global World Championships. Greg was a co-director and coach for Sports Shack Volleyball Club where his 15’s team finished 5th at the Volleyball Festival and the 18’s won the National Championship in 2005. As a high school coach at Westlake High School, he led the program to four league championships, two CIF quarter-finals, two CIF semi-finals, two CIF division I finals, a state championship, and PrepVolleyball #1 national ranking!
In Greg's first season with SBVC, coached the 15-Blue team, who won the SCVA JO Qualifier and placed third in the nation earning a Bronze Medal in the Open Division of Junior Olympics!
As Club Director, he intends to build on the Club's past successes and has plans for an exciting and challenging 2010 season!

K.C. Collins - Administrative Director and Coach
K.C. grew up in Hawaii, living much of the time on a sail boat. She competed in horseback riding, soccer, tennis and sailing. K.C. picked up volleyball at East Beach earning her "AAA" rating in CBVA events in her first year, and played indoor in City League.
K.C. began coaching by assisting the frosh/soph boys at Santa Barbara High School, and became the freshmen girls coach the following season. She has coached and assisted the girls' teams at all levels at SBHS for over 9 years, coached the freshmen boys team on and off for several seasons, and coached 2 seasons of JV girls with Buena High School. K.C. also enjoyed assisting Ed Gover two seasons with the SBCC Women's team.
K.C. began coaching in the Club in '98 and became the Club Administrator in '99 until present. (She also spent one season as the Director for the 805 Carpinteria Volleyball Club, where she oversaw all aspects of 5 travel teams and 3 non-travel teams - the largest number of players in CVC history). While with SBVC, K.C. has coached at all travel team age divisions, club camps and clinics, assisted in developing and coaching the Blenders Program, and partnered with Liz Gilbert over the last three years to create the successful Summer Camps, Madskills and Volley Pints programs!
K.C. is currently in her 12th year coaching with the Club. KC's '03 and '04 14's teams finished in the top 20 of the SCVA and at the Volleyball Festival, and her '05 12's finished 6th at the Festival. In '08, KC led her 14's team to win the SCVA JO Open Qualifier and finish 15th in Open at Junior Olympics! Her '09 team placed 2nd at the SCVA JO Club Qualifier and finished 23rd in the National division of Junior Olympics! In summer '09, K.C. also directed a 3-day clinic for over 45 high school girls attending Appalachee High in Winder, Georgia!

Tina Brown
Originally from Laguna Beach, Tina played four years as a setter/right side hitter for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Her team finished #5 in the nation two years in a row, and Tina earned an All-American award as a setter her senior year. She has continued to play in City League, on indoor adult Club teams, and also competes in beach volleyball.
Tina is married to Pat Brown and has four children, three of which play or have played for the Club. Her oldest daughter currently sets for Cal State LA. Tina taught PE for years at Kellogg School, and for over four years coached its afterschool volleyball program. Tina has also assisted at all levels for Dos Pueblos High School for the last 5 seasons, and was the frosh head coach this past fall leading her team to an undefeated season in league.
Tina has assisted and coached in the younger age divisions with the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club and coaches at its camps and clinics. In '06, Tina assisted the 13-1's team who earned the Bronze medal in the American Division of the Junior Olympics! Tina's '09 12s team finished in Division 1!

Mickey Caughey
Mickey has coaches and played volleyball in Santa Barbara for many years. He has played the game in city leagues, having played on many championship teams. He has played in many USVBA indoor tournaments, placing as high as 7th place in the Masters National Championships. Mickey has also played in many CBVA beach tournaments, and in 1999 took second in the Beach Volleyball Senior Olympics.
Mickey has many years of experience coaching 6th through 12th grade boys and girls volleyball teams from beginning levels to advanced levels. He has coached at Dos Pueblos, San Marcos, Carpinteria and Bishop high schools and for USA Junior Volleyball. He was also the administrator and coach for the Goleta Boy's Junior Volleyball Club and was a coach for the Goleta and Westside B&G Clubs for several years.
Mickey has coached Madskills for SBVC for two years, and coached in Blenders this past season. Mickey is excited for his first season coaching a travel team!

Charlene DeHoog
Char hails rom Bakersfield and is currently in her third year at UCSB as a Psychology Major with an Education Minor. Her goal is to become an elementary school teacher. Char has played for the UCSB Women’s Volleyball Team for all three years.
Char has been playing volleyball since seventh grade and played varsity volleyball for 4 years. During her senior year in high school, she coached a non-traveling 12’s team for Bakersfield Volleyball Club and absolutely loved it. Last year, Char assisted with the Red-Orange Rowdies and decided to come back to head coach in Blenders again this year. Char enjoys sharing her experiences with the girls, and hopes to make their volleyball career a positive and enjoyable experience.

Jason Donnelly
As a native of Santa Barbara, Jason played high school volleyball at San Marcos. He played college volleyball at University Of the Pacific and graduated with a BA in psychology.
Jason has coached at San Marcos High School, coached at many camps at UCSB, UOP, Stanford, Santa Clara, George Washington University, and many camps and clinics for the Club. While overseeing and coaching the volleyball programs at Laguna Blanca, Jason has also coached in the Club for over 10 years. Jason is one of the main founders of our very popular non-travel (Blenders) program, and has coached at the 18's age level for many years. Jason's 2007 18-1 team qualified and competed in the American Division of Junior Olympics! In 2008, Jason co-coached the 18-Elite, who qualified and placed 5th in the National Division!
In 2006, Jason was honored with the High School Coach of the Year award by the Santa Barbara Roundtable! Jason worked many years at Laguna Blanca School as Assistant AD, and Varsity Volleyball Coach for both girls and boys! In 2008, Jason relocated when he was hired as the Assistant for the Women's Volleyball Team at Rutgers in New Jersey!
Jason will be sincerely missed by all at SBVC and will always be welcomed back any time!

Jordan Druary
Jordyn started playing volleyball in the 7th grade for Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club in southern California. She then played for Orange County Volleyball Club her sophomore thru senior years of. She also played on the Varsity team all four years at Woodbridge Hich School in Irvine, where she recieved First Team All-League and First Team All-CIF. She moved to Santa Barbara to attend SBCC and took a year off from volleyball, but missed it so much she played her sophomore year where she earned First Team All-Confrence. Jordyn will transfer to UCSB to finish her college studies, and play on the UCSB Club Volleyball team.
Jordyn has coached Freshmen Girls Volleyball camps at Woodbridge High for two summers, coached in our Blenders League and also teaches private lessons on occasions. In 2008, Jordyn's 12s team finished the SCVA in Division 2! This will be her fourth season coaching with the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club!

Angie Erdmann Angie graduated from UCSB in 2004. Angie has been coaching volleyball for almost 10 years and a Personal Trainer for five years. She has trained and coached athletes of all skill levels and ages. Before coming to Santa Barbara, Angie gained coaching experience in North Dakota. She assisted at all levels at her high school, along with coaching two Junior National teams in the spring time. After graduation from college, Angie coached at camps both in San Diego and for UCSB, coached Junior Varsity level at Laguna Blanca and San Marcos, as well as spent a season assisting the women's team at Santa Barbara City College.
Angie recently coached the 18-2s girls travel team for Temecula Vipers and has returned to Santa Barbara where she is currently coaching a 14s travel team for the boys club. Angie previously coached for the boys club leading her boy's 14-1 team to a 7th place finish in Nationals in 06. She also coached the 15-2 travel team for SBVC, and looks forward to coaching with SBVC again this season!
Angie is currently working at Spectrum as a Personal Trainer. She is passionate about what she does and lives an active lifestyle which includes running marathons in her free time.

Jessie Fahey
Jessie Fahey attended South Hills High School in West Covina, where she played volleyball and competed on the swim team. While also playing for her high schoo, Jessie played club ball for 6 years for Top Gun Volleyball Club. Jessie went on to play as a libero at Citrus Community College, who was ranked 6th in the state, and missed state playoffs by one match. Jessie has transferred to UCSB to begin her major in Communications, and plans to play for the university's Club team.
Befor moving to Santa Barbara, Jessie coached at a couple summer camps for Citrus College, as well as non-travel teams for Top Gun. Jessie has coached this past season's SBVC summer camps as well as fall Madskills. Jessie assisted the '08 13s team and was the head coach of the '09 13-White team.
Jessie looks forward to this season coaching the 12 Blue team.
Jessie has an abundance of energy and passion for coaching the younger age groups, and this season, the Club is excited to have her also supervise the Blenders program!

Nicole Favreau
Nicole was a four year Varsity starter for Rosary High School in Orange County. While there, she was named 1st Team All-Trinity League for three consecutive years, 1st Team All-Orange County her junior and senior year, and named 2nd Team All-CIF her freshman and senior year. She was Rosary's Athlete of the Year her freshmen, sophomore, and junior year and was the school's Most Outstanding Athlete for the class of 2009.
Nicole is currently continuing her volleyball career as a setter for the UCSB Woman's Volleyball team. She is currently undeclared but is looking to pursue a Communications or Religious Studies major with a minor in Accounting.
This is her first year coaching Santa Barbara Volleyball Club and is looking forward to sharing her knowledge of the great sport with her Blenders team!

Todd Garrett
Todd lived in two different countries and four different states growing up but finally discovered "paradise" when he came to Santa Barbara to attend Westmont College. After college he learned to play volleyball on East Beach and Goleta Beach, and now enjoys playing with friends on weekends and in the summer.
Todd is a Sports Medicine and Health teacher at Dos Pueblos High School and a certified EMT.
After coaching the past 7 years both the Boys Junior Varsity and Girls Frosh/Soph teams for Dos Pueblos Highs School, Todd is currently the head coach for the DPHS Girls Varsity team.
Todd's first year in club, he assisted the '09 15-Blue team, who won the SCVA JO Qualifier and placed third in the nation earning a Bronze Medal in the Open Division of Junior Olympics!
Todd is currently working on his personal training certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine to better equip himself for training athletes.

Liz Towne-Gilbert - (Previous Club Director 2007, 2008, 2009)
As a setter at UC Santa Barbara, Liz Towne-Gilbert remains the Gauchos' leader in career assists with 5,542 and ranks fifth with 1,256 career digs. She earned AVCA All-Region honors as a senior and was a member of the United States Volleyball Association National Team. After earning a bachelor's degree in sociology from UCSB, she spent time playing professionally in Europe.
Liz has over ten years of coaching experience at the Division I level. She began her collegiate coaching career at South Florida before accepting a similar position at Arizona. She spent four years in Tucson and helped lead the Wildcats to three NCAA Regional appearances during that time. She then was an assistant at Sacramento State for two seasons, where the Hornets captured the Big Sky Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during both of her seasons. Liz also is one of the founders of the Zona Volleyball Club and, before joining the UCSB staff, she was the Club Director for two years for the Davis Volleyball Club. As the Associate Head Coach for UCSB, Liz Towne-Gilbert helped guide her alma mater to two Big West Conference championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2002. UCSB was ranked as high as No. 8 in 2002 and compiled a 49-12 overall record during her tenure. Then, after spending two years in LA as Associate Head Coach at USC, Liz returned to her home town of Santa Barbara and started with Santa Barbara Volleyball Club.
Liz started with SBVC as Head Coach in '06, and also coached the 16-1's team who qualified and placed 5th in the National Division of the Junior Olympics. Also becoming the Club Director in '07, she coached the 14-1 team who won the SCVA JO Open Qualifier and placed 5th in the Open Division at Junior Olympics. In '08, Liz co-coached the 18 Elite team, who qualified and placed 5th in the National Division. Liz's '09 18-Blue team finished in the top 10 of the SCVA and took a Silver Medal in the National Division of Junior Olympics!

While Club Director, the Club steadily qualified more teams for Junior Olympics, climbed in national recognition and received a County Commendation for a successful non-profit organization. In her three years as Director, while overseeing the travel teams and Blenders, Liz was integral to the creation and success of the popular SUMMER CAMPS, MADSKILLS and VOLLEY PINTS programs!
Liz Towne-Gilbert has stepped down as Club Director but may continue to coach with the Club from time to time.

Ed Gover
Ed Gover has been coaching with the Club since it started. He began his coaching career in 1981. He was an Assistant Coach-Volunteer Long Beach State (NCAA champions), coached at Cal Juniors (JO runner-up 2 years in a row), and "lots of other places...".
Over the years, Ed has coached at all age divisions in Club, coached at many, if not all, Club clinics and camps throughout the years, and is one of the main founders of our very popular non-travel (Blenders) program. Recently, Ed coached the 13's over the past few seasons; with two teams qualifying for the Junior Olympics, and the '06 team winning the Bronze Medal in the American Division!
Ed is a P.E. Teacher at Santa Barbara Junior High, and is the Head Coach for Santa Barbara City College Womens team.

Dwayne Hauschild
As a native of Santa Barbara, Dwayne played high school volleyball at San Marcos. He played college volleyball at Santa Barbara City College all the way to the State Finals and then transferred to Long Beach State where he was a red-shirt member of the 1991 National Championship team. In '92, Dwayne headed to the beach where he began playing tournaments and earned his AAA rating. He is a past East Beach Polar Bear Champion, a title he considers one of his highest volleyball honors.
Dwayne began coaching girls and boys volleyball at San Marcos immediately after graduation. He also helped to start the Santa Barbara Boys Volleyball Club in the early 90's, where he was the director for 3 years, coaching numerous division 1 players. He previously coached girls 16's for SBVC, and has participated in both beach and indoor camps and clinics for many years.
Following a CIF finals run in '02 as an assistant at San Marcos, Dos Pueblos offered him a position rebuilding their program. DPHS has since become a recognizable program in Division 1A finishing in the quarterfinals and semifinals consistently. In '05, Dwayne was honored with the High School Coach of the Year award by the Santa Barbara Roundtable! His '09 Varsity girls team won the Channel League and took 2nd at the CIF Finals played out in UCSB's Rob Gym!
In '08, Dwayne assisted with the 12's team who finished the SCVA in Division 2. Dwayne assisted the '09 16-Blue team who earned a Bronze Medal in the American Division of Junior Olympics!

Jane Hinkle
Jane played for SBVC for 8 years, starting in the Blenders Program! Jane graduated from Santa Barbara High where she played three years on the Varsity team. Jane is currently attending UCSB and is in her second year pursuing a major in Environmental Studies.
Jane coached in the Madskills program over the fall and is looking forward to coaching in the Blenders Program this season!

Jake Hong
Jake played at Bellarmine College Prep High School, then played one year for Cal Poly Men's Volleyball Club team. He volunteered his time for the women's team at Cal Poly SLO, while also coaching the Cal Poly SLO Club team for two years. Jake was the volunteer assistant coach for the women's team for two years at UCSB, and is currently assisting for the women's team at Santa Barbara City College. Jake has coached camps for over 5 years at colleges such as Long Beach State, Stanford, Cal Berkeley, UCSB, College of Charleston, and Cal Poly SLO.
Jake has been coaching or assisting at all age levels for the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club for many years including Blenders, Travel teams, and clinics and camps. Jake also directed the Madskills and Blenders Programs in 2008 and 2009.
Jake assisted the '06 16-1 team as they placed 5th in the National Division at Junior Olympics, and in '07 his 15-1 team likewise competed and placed 5th in the National Division. His '08 15-Elite team placed 5th at the SCVA Qualifer and won the Bronze medal in the Open Division at JO's. Jake's '09 16-Blue team earned a Bronze Medal in the American Division of Junior Olympics!

Erica Lau
Erica has played volleyball her entire life – she started club in 6th grade, playing for South Bay Volleyball Club and Long Beach Mizuno. She also played volleyball for Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. She was a part of the Varsity team her junior and senior year. When she was a junior, the team went undefeated, with a record of 37-0, and they were CIF, State, and National Champions.
Erica is currently continuing her volleyball career as a Defensive Specialist for the UCSB Women’s Volleyball Team. She is pursuing a major in Mathematics/Economics, and hopes to minor in Accounting.
She is excited to start her first year coaching Blenders with Santa Barbara Volleyball Club. |

Lily Lopez
Lily lives in Yorba Linda with her parents and younger brother and sister, who also play volleyball.
Lily Lopez is a sophomore at UCSB and a starting middle blocker on the Womens volleyball team. Before coming to Santa Barbara, she attended Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana where she played volleyball for four years. While there, she accumulated awards such as Most Improved, Trinity All- League Second Team in 2006, Varsity Best Offensive Player, Trinity All-League Second Team, Varsity MVP and California Interscholastic Federation Award in 2007, finishing in her senior year as Varsity Captain and MVP in 2008.
Lily has been playing club volleyball since fifth grade, with clubs Impact, Roxy and Golden West. Her senior year, her club team won the Silver Medal at Junior Olympics. Since coming to UCSB, she won Big West All Freshman Team in 2008-2009.
She’s looking forward to coaching younger girls and sharing her volleyball experiences.

Katherine Niksto
Kat grew up in Santa Barbara and played for Dos Pueblos and the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club. Kat continued her playing career at Pitzer College for the combined Pomona-Pitzer volleyball squad, and was a two-time All-Southern California Intercollegiate Conference (SCIAC) selection. She also garnered Honorable Mention All-Regional honors and was twice named the Hens' team Most Valuable Player.
Graduating in 2005 with a dual degree in psychology and art, Kat continued on to Temple University where she served as the Director of Operations/Assistant Coach for 3 years. Kat helped guide the Owls to 3 consecutive East Division A10 Championships, as well as produce 10 All Conference players.
Graduating from Temple in 2008 with a master's degree in Sport Management, Kat moved back to Santa Barbara where she works for the San Roque Pet Hospital in addition to returning to coach with SBVC!

Greg Novak
Originally from Camarillo, Greg was a die-hard surfer throughout high school and college. Greg was introduced to the beach volleyball game in 1990 by Kathy Hanley and Kathy Gregory, then spent many years competing in the CBVA beach volleyball events where he earned his "AA" rating, and also played indoors on City League teams.
Greg has coached high school girls volleyball including over six years at Dos Pueblos High, and two years assisting boys varsity at Santa Barbara High. Greg is in his 8th year coaching club volleyball, and is currently the DPHS Girls Varsity Assistant coach. In his last two seasons, his JV teams have won 5 tournaments in a row. He has also coached various age divisions for club Travel and Blenders teams, as well as Club camps and clinics throughout the years. Greg assisted the '08 14's team to earning a 15th place finish in the Open Division of Junior Olympics, as well as the '09 14-Blue team to taking 2nd at the SCVA JO Qualifier and earning a bid and finishing 23rd in the National Division of Junior Olympics!
He works full-time, and on the side as the Club's graphic designer, photographer and webmaster. He also makes DVD musical slide shows for special events! Greg also enjoys teaching beach doubles lessons during the summer.

Desiree Partlow
Desiree attended high school in
Northern California
where she was a three year Varsity setter earning League MVP her senior year as well as making the CIF All-Section team. Despite losing her athletic scholarships during post season, she was able to continue to play at the collegiate level for three years before hanging up her jersey to finish her degree in Civil Engineering at
Chico
State
. While schooling in Chico, Desiree also coached the 14-1 team at Club
Chico.
Desiree Partlow assisted two years for girls Frosh team at Santa Barbara High, and the past season assisting the JV team at Dos Pueblos High, who went undefeated in league. Desiree also coached the '09 15-Red travel team who finished in division 4! Desiree is excited to assist in the 15s again this season with SBVC.
Since moving to

, Desiree has continued to satisfy her passion for volleyball by playing on the weekends at
East
Beach
when she is not sailing, surfing or traveling around the globe.

Courtney Preston
Courtney, a twin daughter of UCSB Men's Coach Ken Preston, played for the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club for seven years - she started on one of the first 12's team! Courtney also played at San Marcos High School as a defensive specialist for all 4 years.
Courtney has coached boys and girls Frosh/Soph teams at San Marcos for two years, and has been coaching for the Club the past four years. She has coached Blenders teams and has coached and assisted various levels of Travel Teams. Courtney assisted the '05 12's travel team who placed 6th at the Volleyball Festival, and her '06 12's travel team finished the SCVA season as one of the top 10 teams! In '08, Courtney helped to lead the 16-Elite team to a Silver medal in the American Division at Junior Olympics.Courtney is currently a teacher and looks forward to another successful year coaching with the Club.

Kenny Preston - (Previous Club Director 1999, 2000)
Kenny was the head coach of the UCSB men’s program from 1979-2008, retiring this year after more than 500 wins. After graduating from UCSB in 1970, he began his coaching career in San Luis Obispo where he was the first head coach in men’s volleyball for Cal Poly(from 1975-76 with a 81-31 record) and started the first women’s team at Cuesta College(from 1976-77 with a 34-14 record). He moved on to Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio where he stayed one year with their Men’s program before accepting the job at UCSB. During the next thirty years, he not only coached UCSB but in 1989 and 90 he doubled as Westmont Women’s head coach where he finished with a 50-18 record and a fifth place national finish in 90. He has also served as Director of the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club in 1999 and 2000, coached the 16’s, 17’s and 18’s teams from 2001-03 and this past season filled in as assistant coach with his daughter Courtney as their 16 Elite team captured the Silver Medal at Junior Olympics in Dallas. Kenny has had extensive international experience with the USA Men’s National team, traveling around the world to various tournaments and matches. He has been to two world championships, three World University Games, a Pan American Games and served as an adviser at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and an assistant coach at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Kenny will remain in the “cadre of leaders” during future quadreniums and have responsibilities in the USA Volleyball Junior and Youth National Teams.

Malinda Reese
Malinda graduated from Westmont with a Engineering Physics degree, and currently works for the City of Santa Barbara. While at Westmont, Malinda played for the women's volleyball team and received NAIA & GSAC Scholar-Athlete honors for two years, a Golden Eagle award two years running, and was the team captain and NAIA region II Libero of the Year her senior year.
Malinda has assisted with summer camps for Notre Dame High School in Belmont, CA, and recently coached the JV girls team at Marymount of Santa Barbara leading the team to an undefeated season and finishing first place in the league tournament.
Malinda looks forward to her first year coaching a travel team with SBVC.

Katie Ring
Katie is from Portola Valley. She played high school volleyball for St. Francis Mountain View. As libero her junior and senior year she competed in the nor-cal finals and as co-captain her senior year led her team to finish 2nd in Northern California. Katie played for vision volleyball club for 7 years. Her favorite award she has ever received was “The Hammer” award at Junior Olympics.
Katie is in her second year at UCSB, and playing for the Gauchos. She has not decided on a major yet, but is leaning towards biology. This year she earned the Big West Academic All-Conference honor.
Katie loves working with kids and cannot wait to start the coaching in the Blenders Program this season!

Stacey Schmidt
Stacey began her volleyball career at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, where she played four years, three of which she was a varsity starter. She was named MVP of the team both her Junior and Senior years, as well as earning the Scholar Athlete honor each year. Stacey was also named to the First Team All Sunset League.
Stacey also played club volleyball for TCA Volleyball Club for four years. Her team won the gold medal in the 2006 Junior Olympic volleyball championships.
Stacey is in her third year at UCSB, playing on the women’s team where she plays both Opposite and Middle. She is majoring in Business Economics with a minor in Sport Management. This year she was named to the First Team All Big West. She was also awarded the Big West All Academic Award.
Stacey coached in the Club's summer camp, and is looking forward to continuing to coach this season in the Blenders Program.

Matt Schroeder
Matt was born in hawaii and grew up in the Bay Area. Matt attended De La Salle High School and played basketball and volleyball, where his teams won two NCS Championships in basketball and two in volleyball. He started on both teams as a point guard and an outside hitter.
Matt
graduated from Westmont College with a degree in Economics/Business, while he played four years on the club volleyball team at Westmont. Matt is also an avid frisbee golfer (shot a course record at the Westmont campus course). He earned a AAA rating in beach volleyball at the young age of 20, and also qualified for an AVP tournament in 2008. He plans to make a run for the AVP tour in the summer of 2009. Currently Matt trades mutual funds at Marathon Investment Programs in Montecito and enjoys following the stock market in general.
Matt currently coaches the Girls JV Volleyball team at Laguna Blanca, and is a travel team coach with the Club.

John Sener John’s volleyball career started on East Beach in the mid 70s after graduating from Bishop Diego High School in '74. John played for the Oregon State University Club team in '75. Then John moved back to California, where he resumed his love for playing beach volleyball at Monterey and Carmel beaches.
John has played in numerous beach tournaments through out the years earning an “A” rating in Santa Cruz and again in Santa Barbara. John returned to Santa Barbara and continued to be active in City league volleyball and playing with the world famous “nooners” volleyball group on East Beach. In '05 John was offered the opportunity to coach at Dos Pueblos High School, where he has flourished as a coach for both the girls and boys program. He assisted the girls JV team for years as well as was the head coach for the Boys JV team. John just finished a season as the girls JV coach where his team went undefeated in league.
John assisted the '09 18-Blue team who received a Silver Medal in the National Division of Junior Olympics. John currently works as a Real Estate Broker, and looks forward to being a head travel team coach for SBVC this season!

Leigh Stephenson
Leigh hails from Nipomo, California. Currently, she is majoring in history and German at UCSB and aspires to become a teacher and plans live abroad following graduation.
Leigh was a four-year varsity letter-winner, where she played volleyball at Nipomo High School as a setter. First of her three straight all-county selections came as a sophomore. As a junior and senior she repeated as Los Padres League MVP and was named San Luis Obispo County Player of the Year while leading the Titans to the CIF Division III state tournament. Leigh was also an all-league soccer player during her time at Nipomo High School.
Although a setter in high school, Leigh played club volleyball as a libero with SLO Juniors. Leigh came to Santa Barbara to play volleyball for UCSB, and as a junior and senior she started every contest as libero for the Gauchos. During her junior year, Leigh set the UCSB and Big West single season dig record with 650 digs. As a senior, she was named second team All-Big West. Leigh also earned Academic All-Big West honors and was named the UCSB women's volleyball Golden Eagle Award winner as a junior and senior.
Leigh coached last season in Blenders and this season looks forward to being an assitant travel coach for SBVC!

Cary Whittaker
Cary is currently a senior at UCSB, pursuing a major in history and a minor in exercise and sports studies (athletic coaching), with the future intent of teaching high school history and coaching high school/club volleyball upon receiving her teaching credential.
Cary has played volleyball as a Libero/Defensive Specialist since 7th grade and played most recently for Golden Bear Volleyball Club in Berkeley, California for four years. During that time, she competed at a national level qualifying and competing in the Junior Olympics in 03, 04, and 05. In addition, she played four years for Campolindo High School in Moraga, helping her team win multiple North Coast Section Championships along with making it to the State semi-finals twice. For her high school play, Cary also received many individual awards, such as Most Valuable Player, Best Defensive Player, Most Inspirational Player and the Coach’s Award.
Cary has coached for two years working with 6th and 8th graders at a middle school in Moraga when she was a junior and senior in high school. Most recently, she spent the last three summers working with kids at the UC Berkeley Alumni camp as a counselor.
Cary looks forward to her first year assisting a travel team with SBVC!

Shalen Williams
Shalen attended high school in West Covina, where she was captain for her high school team who made it to the CIF semi-finals her junior and senior year. She also earned SS All CIF 2nd team two years in a row, and Player of the Year (Valley Vista League) and Team MVP her senior year. She earned a full athletic scholarship to attend and play at George Mason University in Virginia, where she was a team captain and the team was Colonial Conference Runners-Up her senior year.
After graduating college, Shalen assisted the varsity girls team at her alma mater High School, and travel teams for Club West Volleyball Club, where her '06 15-1 team earned a bid to Junior Olympics. she also spent a year coaching a 16-1 club travel team in Wichita, KS, then returned to Santa Barbara and is currently coaching the girls frosh team for Carpinteria High School.
Shalen is married with a son, and is currently working as a substitute teacher and lifeguard/swim instructor. Shalen is excited to join SBVC coaching in the 18s division!

Jacky Yao
Jacky grew up in the Bay Area. Jacky attended Redwood Christian and played soccer, basketball, volleyball, and ran cross country. He was a four year starter on the varsity volleyball team where he played as an outside hitter and setter; his high school team won league two out of the four years and he received All-League honors the last two seasons. After high school, Jacky played for the men’s club team at San Francisco State University before transferring to UCSB. Jacky is now a Senior majoring in Psychology and minoring in Sports Management.
Jacky coached the boys’ varsity at Redwood Christian while assisting the girls’ varsity for two years. He also coached at Core Volleyball Club, where he assisted the 18-1’s team.
Jacky assisted a travel team last season and has coached Blenders and Madskills for the Club. This is Jacky's second year coaching at SBVC.

Steve Zelko
Steve started playing volleyall in High School and was also a player for the Pacific Rim Junior International Volleyball. He then went on to play on the men's team at UCSB for 4 years, where he earned Most Improved Player in 1981. He continues his passion for playing by competing the USA Indoor Adult Volleyball leagues, where he has been a player-coach for various teams participating in the Adult Nationals at various locations in the USA, winning 8 national championships, and receiving 6 All Tournametn Honors over the years.
Originally from Hawaii, Steven Zelko M.D., has enjoyed a lengthy carreer as an Eye Physician and Surgeon in Santa Barbara. While having a daughter in the Club, Steve has lent his extensive volleyball knowledge as an assistant coach for Santa Barbara Volleyball Club over the past few years in the all the age divisions. Steve has also assisted and coached with the boys club as well.
As an assistant, Steve helped to lead the '08 14's team to winning the SCVA Qualifier and placing 15th in the Open Division of Junior Olympics! |
