Each
year the Club works hard to amass scholarship funds by soliciting
corporate sponsorships and private donations. Scholarships
Awards are also made possible in part by the generous grants
provided over the seasons by the following:
Santa
Barbara Foundation
George B. Page Foundation
The Orfalea Fund
Orfalea Family Foundation
Morgan
Stanley Foundation
First American Title Company
Additionally,
with the help of our Members, the Club presents various fundraisers
like raffles, apparel sales, and our very successful movie
screening of "The Endless Summer II" in 2004.
Fundraising ideas from our Members are always encouraged!
The
Scholarship Fund allows the Club to implement our mission
statement, which promises "to promote women's volleyball
throughout the Santa Barbara community and to make every effort
to achieve economic and ethnic diversity within the Club."
The Club believes that besides developing athletic skills,
a player's participation in this club can foster lasting friendships,
develop leadership and cooperation skills for every day life,
and may provide an avenue towards a volleyball scholarship
at a major university. The Club does, however, understand
that participation is expensive due to the costs of gym facilities,
tournaments, travel, and coaching and administration staff.
Therefore, the Club makes every attempt to provide those in
need with scholarship awards.
The
Club's Scholarship Committee distributes the scholarship monies
raised each year to as many eligible families as possible.
In so doing, the Club finds it necessary to provide partial
scholarships on its base dues. Only in rare circumstances
will the Club offer full scholarships. Scholarships do not
cover the travel costs for overnight tournaments which typically
include an overnight stay in a hotel, i.e. San Diego, the
JO Qualifiers and Regionals in Los Angeles. However, the Club
does try to keep the costs of these events to a minimum by
sharing the costs between all the players and by staying in
moderately priced accommodations.
Costs
to travel to any optional or post-season tournament, such
as the Junior Olympics or the Volleyball Festival in Reno,
is an additional expense to the player, and no scholarships
are awarded on those costs.
The
following factors are considered to determine who is qualified
to receive scholarships:
1.
Financial Need
2. Seniority in the Club
3. Number of Siblings Currently Playing in the Club
